John Dexter Clark, 91, of Cody, Wyoming, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Spirit Mountain Hospice on March 2, 2026. Services will be held at The Church of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 1407 13th Street, on Friday, March 6, at 10:00 a.m.
John was born in Powell, Wyoming, on February 28, 1937, to Paul and Hazel Clark. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Powell High School in 1954. After a year at Northwest Community College, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served for almost two years and was stationed in Guam. He returned home to continue his studies at Northwest Community College and began dating Barbara Jameson. They married on August 22, 1958, and welcomed three daughters.
John worked several jobs before settling at Cody Gas Company, where he worked for over 35 years. He was a meticulous record keeper and took pride in caring for his yard, his garage, and his cars. He enjoyed many hobbies and led an active life. While in high school, John excelled at sports and earned “Rebounder of the Year” his senior year. He was a regular at the Paul Stock tennis courts and later played pickleball. John was most known for his daily walks all over Cody—walking rain or shine.
He could fix anything and loved tinkering in his woodshop, where he made toy swords, cars, and trucks for his grandchildren. He enjoyed Louis L’Amour books, vanilla ice cream with chocolate Hershey syrup, and Lay’s potato chips.
His biggest accomplishment and greatest love in life was his family. John was a man of few words, but his love and devotion to his family spoke volumes.
John was preceded in death by his father and mother and sister, Elaine Young. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara; his daughters, Kelli Clark Sanders (Daniel) of Orem, Utah; Leslie Clark Christiansen (Bart) of Elizabeth, Colorado; and Colleen Clark Margetts (Jim) of Chadron, Nebraska; 16 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
